Having a fireplace in your home can be really nice. Fireplaces can add to your home in both a functional and aesthetic manner. When it comes to adding a new fireplace to your home, you should consider the following things.

Primary Purpose

First, when looking at fireplaces, you need to consider what purpose you want the fireplace to serve in your home.

Do you want the fireplace to help heat your home effectively? Or do you want a fireplace simply to improve the visual appeal of your home? Or are you hoping to get both out of a fireplace?

Knowing what you want to get out of the fireplace will increase the likelihood that you will purchase a fireplace that will be capable of achieving that objective.

Heating Intention

Second, you need to consider what you want the fireplace to heat. Do you want it just to provide a little extra heat in a room? Do you want that to be the primary method of heating up that room?

What you don't want to do is count on the fireplace to heat up multiple rooms of your home. A fireplace works well at heating up one main room, but it shouldn't be relied upon to heat more than one room or area. That is not what a fireplace is designed to do.

Control Method

Third, you will want to consider what type of control method you want over the fireplace. Do you want a fireplace with a thermostat so that it turns on when the room is at a specific temperature and turns off when the room meets that temperature, more like a heater? Or do you want a fireplace that you have to turn on manually? Or do you want a fireplace that you can program with an app on your smartphone? Choose a dial and temperature control option that works best for your life.

Décor Style

Fourth, when looking at fireplaces, you need to know what your decorating style is. You can find fireplaces that have many different style influences, from modern to country to urban, so knowing your home decorating style will help you narrow down and find the fireplace that will fit in aesthetically with your home.

Fuel Source

Finally, you need to consider what type of fuel source you want the fireplace to have. With a gas fireplace, you will need to also have space to vent the fireplace properly. The same goes for a pellet-burning fireplace. That usually means placing the fireplace against a wall so that venting is possible.

Or you can go with an electric fireplace. With an electric fireplace, no venting is necessary, but you will add to your electric bill.

When it comes to purchasing a new fireplace, you will want to consider its primary purpose, how you control it, what it looks like, and how you want it to deliver fuel. Knowing how you feel about these things will make narrowing down your choices much easier.
